Traditional Dress

Mexico’s dress have been characterized as being special and unique garments which have different designs according to the region they come from.  Mexican dresses have a unique style because they have designs that are embroidered onto the dresses with flowers or animals. Mexican embroidered dresses have always been worn as an everyday wear and not on special occasions like a celebration of some sort.  Mexican dresses have simple design which makes it easy for summer and warm climates.  Mexican garments are “loose flowing, made of natural fibers, usually cotton, and embroidered with vibrant thread and beads”.

For many people the sombrero is a symbol of Mexican culture. The
sombrero has a wide rimmed to create a shade for the worker’s faces. This
protects the person from the hot sun; since this is only income that gives the
worker’s enough money to provide for their families. Some sombreros are made
with cheap straw but still get the job done.

The Quechquemitl is a garment that has been worn by different indigenous groups in Mexico.  This garment consists of two pieces of rectangular cloth, which is sowed by hand; these two pieces are sewed together that forms a poncho or a shawl.  This is usually worn by hanging off the shoulders, and the upper part of the women is covered.  This shawl is an everyday wear, but it depends on what one is wearing.  If someone is going out on a special occasion, the person will try to match the shawl to their dress.

Rebozo is a long piece of cloth used by women mostly in Mexico. This garment can be used in different ways such as, wrapped around the head and upper part of the body to provide shade from the sun, provides warmth and is also used as an accessory to an outfit. The Rebozo is used to carry babies in and to carry large bundles (firewood, groceries, plants, fabrics); this is mostly seen in indigenous women. The Rebozo measures around “4 ½ feet“.

Puebla’s dresses and blouses usually have short sleeves and their wardrobe is loose. “The Mexican folklore dresses are used by the traditional folk dancers and are very fancy in their overall look”. People in Mexico want to feel comfortable in their clothes so, they wear clothes that are loose and appropriate for different kinds of weather. Puebla’s dresses are very long and colorful. The top of the dress has short sleeves that are usually fluffy. The bottom part of the dress flares out and when lifted it looks like a fan.

Mexican skirts are usually embroidered with colorful fabrics and usually have designs on them. Some skirts have special designs that tell a story of Mexican culture. “There are many different skirt styles available; this depends greatly on the wearer’s area of origin. Some are worn to ankle length, while others are worn to the knees”. Mexican skirts are an everyday wardrobe.
